Red Velvet means red velvet in Spanish, it is a traditional American cake whose origin is a mystery since there are many stories about this case, one of the most honored was served at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York but it became one of the most famous worldwide thanks to a film, Steel Magnolias, in which Julia Roberts had this cake as a wedding cake, that if it had the shape of an armadillo.

Today we are going to make a version of this cake making cookies that once baked will be filled with a cream of cheese to suck your fingers, which by the way you remember the alfajores. How to make Red Velvet Cookies with cheese frosting



  • 150 grams of flour
  • 1 teaspoon of cocoa without sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 150 grams of margarine
  • 100 grams of sugar
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of chemical yeast
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon of red gel dye

Frosting or filling:

  • 150 grams of cream cheese
  • 150 grams of margarine
  • 150 grams of Sugar glass


Put the margarine or butter in a large bowl and add the rest of the ingredients. We mix everything until it is integrated.

With a spoon we take portions of the mixture that we deposit in a tray with greaseproof paper, with the help of a spatula or knife we ​​extend it a little, we must leave space between them as they expand a little. We put in the oven that must be preheated, at 180º C for 12 minutes. Remove and let cool in a grid.

While the cookies cool we will prepare the cream or frosting with which we will fill them. As simple as putting in a large bowl the icing sugar, cream cheese and margarine or butter at room temperature, we mix everything with rods. If mixing it has been inconsistent, put it in the fridge for a while. We take a cookie and from the bottom, we extend a layer, cover it with another cookie and we have our Red Velvet Cookie Sandwich ready with cheese frosting.
