The raffia and straw bags have become a “must have”. Whether round, fringed, hand-held or XXL size, there’s sure to be a raffia, straw or wicker bag for you.
The raffia and straw handbags may once have been reserved only for sunny days at the beach or to go to the market. However, last season, the catwalks fell to these natural fibers.
Prada, Michael Kors, Fendi, Miu Miu, Jimmy Choo, Ulla Johnson, Badgley Mischka, Phillip Lim 3.1, and so on, showed us innumerable options: from microscopic sized picnic baskets to architectural designs of straw, wicker, and raffia.
Raffia, straw, and wicker conquer the fashion
The art of weaving handbags with natural fibers such as dry grass or bamboo, is millennia old, with basketry techniques that go back at least to ancient Egypt. But it was in the 1950s when the raffia bag was perceived as an elegant accessory associated with glamor and luxury travel. In fact, it became a symbol of status. Audrey Hepburn was one of the first “celebrities” to fall victim to the benefits of this natural fiber.
But the peak moment came at the end of the sixties and seventies when Jane Birkin made her picnic basket her distinctive accessory when she walked around Cannes, Paris, and London. She did not know it then, but she was planting the seed for a million Instagram posts.
